Josh is running for County Commissioner to lower costs, fix our safety net, and deliver for working families.

Meet Josh
Josh Bassais was born in North Minneapolis and has spent nearly his entire life in the neighborhoods of South Minneapolis — more than three-quarters of it in Ward 8. He started his career fighting for working people as a union business rep with LIUNA and UNITE HERE, standing up for fair wages, dignity on the job, and the right to be heard.
Josh later moved into the private sector, where he managed a multimillion-dollar budget and learned firsthand how to make complex systems work efficiently and responsibly. As Lyndale Neighborhood Board President, he put those skills to work close to home — helping families navigate challenges, bridging voices across the community, and building a neighborhood where people felt seen.
Now raising his kids in Minneapolis Public Schools, Josh is committed to the same community that raised him. He even bought back the home he grew up in — his mother’s house — so he could root his own family in the place that shaped him. Josh is running for Hennepin County Commissioner to bring that same deep care, practical experience, and working-class commitment to a county government that too often feels distant from the people it’s meant to serve.

We’re now less than four months away from the February 3rd, 2026 DFL caucus — the moment this movement proves its strength and District 3 chooses the kind of leadership families deserve. Caucus night is where we decide whether our county gets a commissioner who actually shows up for the people who rely on county services every single day.
Volunteers across District 3 are already knocking doors, hosting house parties, talking to their neighbors, and committing to caucus. This campaign is grounded in the lived experience of the communities Josh has spent his life in across South Minneapolis.
But to win the DFL endorsement, we need you. Every conversation matters. Every volunteer shifts the balance. Every new caucus commitment brings us closer to building a county government that works for renters, parents, seniors, and every neighbor who’s been left waiting too long for the services they depend on.
No experience is required — just the belief that Hennepin County can, and must, do better.

JOSH'S VISION FOR HENNEPIN COUNTY
Hennepin County shapes so much of daily life — housing, public health, safety, and the services families depend on. Too many residents wait too long for help or fall through the cracks.
My priorities come directly from the neighborhoods I’ve lived in and served across Minneapolis: build real safety, expand housing stability, and make county government actually work for the people who rely on it most.
Public Safety
Real safety comes from meeting people’s needs before crisis ever occurs. That means mental health support, treatment, stable housing, and community-based responses that prevent harm and reduce emergencies.
I’ll work with stakeholders and regional partners to strengthen the county systems that actually keep people safe and ensure every resident has access to the support they need — not just a response after things go wrong.
Housing
Too many families wait months for help or get lost in confusing, slow-moving county housing programs. I’ll push for faster, clearer, more accountable pathways to housing — making sure people can access stability without endless delays or barriers.
Housing is the foundation of everything else, and county government should treat it that way.
Transit
From getting to work to accessing services, transit is a lifeline — but too many residents face gaps, delays, or routes that don’t match their everyday needs.
I’ll work cross jurisdictionally to strengthen reliable transit connections, improve access to key county services, and support a transportation system that makes it easier for everyone to move through our community safely, affordably, and sustainably.
County Services
Whether it’s public health, child and family services, or basic support, county government should help — not hinder. But right now, many systems are slow, outdated, and hard to navigate.
I’ll work to modernize and streamline these services so residents get answers, not dead ends — and so the county delivers the dignity, efficiency, and responsiveness people deserve.
